Favorite Sugar Free Treats

I don’t think anyone is a bigger snacker or has a bigger sweet tooth than me. Sometimes I cave and have a hand full of candy or half a box of Cheez-Its, but I try to fight my urges. Over the years, I have really learned to love eating healthy. Not only do I overall feel healthier, but there are some healthy treats that I’ve wound up really enjoying. I know how hard it is to avoid the bag of Sweet Tarts (my favorite) sitting in your cabinet or put down the bag of Doritos after 6 chips. I hope I can help give you all some healthy alternatives, even though they may not be as great as those Pull-n-Peel Twizzlers..😜

Fruit🍏

I have always loved to eat all kinds of fruit even as a child. I always make sure I keep some sort of berry, melon, etc. to crush my candy cravings. If I’m craving something chocolatey or dessert-like, I’ll enjoy a granny smith apple with some peanut butter. A perfect mix of sweet and salty!

Veggies🥕

There’s something about raw veggies that I love. I remember eating a whole bag of baby carrots with my dad religiously as a kid. I ate carrots so much that my family told me my skin was going to turn orange. I’ll throw some on a plate with some salt or add a little lite ranch to the side depending on the mood I’m in!

Starbucks Cold Brew☕

It may be a little difficult to resist the Pumpkin Spice Latte around the holidays or pass up the opportunity to try a Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew. Trust me, I’ve fought the urge many times and sometimes I caved. Starbucks does have 2 sugar free syrup options so I figured I’d give them a try. My go-to order is a venti cold brew with 5 pumps of sugar free cinnamon dolce syrup and oatmilk (or coconut milk). No sugar in this drink and it’s so flavorful!

Quest Cookies🍪

When I really just want a nice, big old chocolate chip cookie or a sweet, sugar-filled cupcake, I turn to these Quest cookies. They’re huge and I swear just as good as an unhealthy cookie. Only 4 grams of net carbs, less than 1 gram of sugar, and 15 grams of protein! Amazing if you don’t eat breakfast, but want a little substance or perfect for a midday snack when you’re about to crash. I just discovered putting these in the oven for a few minutes too which makes them 10x better!

Berry Shake🍓

I usually enjoy these after my workout. I put some frozen berries, a scoop of Justin’s peanut butter, protein powder, a splash of almond milk, and a splash of water in a blender. It’s pretty filling for after a workout and great if you need to add some extra protein to your diet!

Popcorn🍿

Popcorn is so airy and light, it’s like you’re not eating actual food. And there’s so much in a microwavable bag, it’s perfect for snacking on the couch while watching your favorite show. It is high in nutrients and one of the best sources of fiber!

Mixed Nuts🥜

This is one of my favorite snacks at night or for midday. Nuts are pretty filling and I’m always looking for foods that are a good source of protein since I work out a decent amount. They make a jar that has a mix of pistachios, almonds, and cashews which are my 3 favorite kinds. Now my mouth is watering..

Breakfast Bars🍌

I wrote a whole post about this on my blog so I’ll link it here if you want to check them out. It’s a perfect snack for the mornings and they are super filling. If you like oats, peanut butter, and bananas, you’ll love these!

Pickles🥒

This is one you either love or you hate. I could sit here and eat a whole jar of pickles and still have room to eat more. I even eat the pickle potato chips, if you ever had the pleasure of seeing them in the store. Great snack!

Diet Coke🥤

I can’t believe looking back I used to drink regular sugar-filled Coke. The amount of sugar in a glass makes me nauseous to think about. I actually prefer the taste of diet to regular now. This is a nice treat I like to have at night probably 4 times a week.

What are some of your favorite healthier snacks you have instead when you’re actually craving a nice Reeses Cup? What should I be adding to my list😉 Let me know below!

  1. Frozen berries. I buy a large bag of them and fill a bowl with frozen berries to munch on. Frozen grapes are good too but they’re usually $$$ in Canada. I eat a lot of apples too which is my go-to snack when I’m feeling hangry, or bored.

These days I crave crushed ice so I’ve resorted to blending ice up with a few splashes of margarita mix (it’s non-alcoholic but it can be alcoholic depending on your taste). I like the tart flavor of the lime and it’s sweet and refreshing. It’s not exactly healthy but I save lots of money making this instead of buying slushees at he gas station. It’s really the crushed ice I want. At work, there’s a crushed ice machine so I fill up my 1L water bottle with crushed ice to treat myself after my shift is over. I’m not a water drinker but I have no problems downing that entire water bottle!

    1. Ooooh that sounds awesome! I really admire people who can crunch on ice because I would love to (as weird as that sounds). My teeth are SO sensitive so things that are too cold really bother them☹️ frozen grapes are good! I just suck on them until they’re not so cold anymore😅

  2. Awesome lineup, Jaimie!

The secret – mine at least – is to “zen out” and forget I’m eating healthy. Just delight in the moment and contemplate only later how good you were. During the munch-munch fest itself, the only “good” on the radar will describe the snack’s qualities.

You mention Cheez-Its. In that category, one of my favorite “healthy” treats was a handful of Reduced Fat Better Cheddars. Definitely preferable, taste-wise, to the regular variety, actually. Sadly, they’ve been gone for a while now. Maybe they’re available still in Jersey, but in a neighboring state, the shelves have been empty for years.

There are sites out there dedicated to nostalgia for discontinued food lines, and I certainly have my own long list of lost food loves. Many of them going back to when I was a little kid.

Rather off-topic, certainly, and I appreciate your indulgence. Just thought I’d throw it out there. Great. Now your Easter weekend is perfect, right Jaimie?

      1. I used to steam them but then tried roasting them. Peel and cut to 3/4 inch pieces. Toss with olive oil. 400 degrees. I start checking them at the 1/2 mark. Brings out the sweetness.
